Earn one point for virtually every dollar you spend on the card. (Most common exceptions are finance charges, cash advances and the like.)

Points have no expiration date and there's no limit to the number of points you can earn

Earn double points for "everyday purchases" at supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, the U.S. Postal Service, and wireless phone providers (Does this mean with the double points promotion that this increases to FOUR points/dollar?)

Can purchase points in 1,000-point increments for $25/1,000 points.

Membership Rewards points can be redeemed for a cash reward at a rate of $100 per 20,000 points. You must have at least 20,000 points available to request a cash reward. (0.5% Cash Back, but with double points, becomes effectively 1% Cash Back.)

Can transfer points to frequent flyer/stayer accounts normally for 1 point to 1 mile/point. (I've seen other threads that claim the value of one FF mile is 1-2 cents. Therefore with this promotion, points would be worth 2%-4% Cash Back if converted into FF miles, and possibly 4-8% Cash Back if "everyday purchase" points are doubled.)

A fee is charged to offset the federal excise tax that American Express must pay when transferring points into a frequent flyer U.S. airline account. The fee is $0.0004 per point, with a maximum fee of $50, which will be charged to your account at the time the points are transferred.

Double points will be awarded on the positive difference between the total amount of purchases in the calendar month of October and in each of the calendar months of November, December and January. For example, if you spend $1,000 in October, $1,200 in November, $1,500 in December and $800 in January, the positive difference in your spending would be $700 and you would earn 700 bonus points in addition to the 3,500 regular points you would have earned for your spending from November through January.

Bonus points will only be earned on Membership Rewards eligible transactions. You are only eligible to earn double points from the month in which you enroll in the promotion onwards. This promotion will not grant double points on bonus points awarded as part of any other promotion.

Double points will be credited to your Membership Rewards account approximately 12-14 weeks after the charges appear on your monthly billing statement.
